Le vétéran designer et directeur de Rare, Gregg Mayles, quitterait apparemment le studio suite aux vastes coupes dans le personnel et les projets d'hier chez Xbox, qui ont inclus le titre en développement de longue date Everwild.

Selon VGC, le départ de Mayles met un terme à une carrière remarquable de 35 ans chez Rare, débutant avec des succès précoces comme Battletoads sur NES et se poursuivant durant l'âge d'or du studio sur N64, où il a créé des personnages emblématiques tels que Diddy Kong.

Principalement connu comme directeur du classique N64 Banjo-Kazooie, Mayles a ensuite été directeur créatif sur le succès d'aventure pirate Sea of Thieves. Plus récemment, il a passé les quatre dernières années à diriger le développement d'Everwild, la suite fantastique tant attendue de Rare qui a désormais été officiellement annulée.

Microsoft a désormais confirmé l'annulation d'Everwild, six ans après sa révélation initiale et près d'une décennie depuis le début de son développement. Louise O'Connor, la productrice exécutive du jeu, quitterait également Rare après plus de 20 ans au sein du studio.

IGN a contacté Microsoft pour obtenir un commentaire.

La dernière bande-annonce d'Everwild, diffusée en juillet 2020, décrivait le jeu comme "une toute nouvelle propriété intellectuelle de Rare" promettant "une expérience unique et inoubliable dans un monde naturel et magique". Plus tôt cette année, le responsable de Xbox Phil Spencer a mentionné avoir récemment visité le studio pour vérifier l'avancée du jeu, déclarant : "C'est agréable de voir l'équipe sur Everwild et les progrès qu'ils réalisent."

Cependant, hier après-midi, Xbox a officiellement confirmé l'annulation d'Everwild dans un e-mail envoyé à toute l'entreprise par Matt Booty, responsable de Xbox Game Studios. L'e-mail a également confirmé l'annulation du reboot de Perfect Dark par The Initiative, ainsi que plusieurs projets non annoncés, dont un nouveau MMORPG du développeur de The Elder Scrolls Online, ZeniMax Online Studios.

"Nous avons pris la décision d'arrêter le développement de Perfect Dark et d'Everwild, et de mettre fin à plusieurs projets non annoncés dans notre portefeuille", a déclaré Booty.

"Dans le cadre de ce changement, nous fermons l'un de nos studios, The Initiative. Ces décisions, ainsi que d'autres ajustements organisationnels, reflètent un effort plus large pour recentrer nos priorités et allouer nos ressources de manière à positionner nos équipes pour le succès dans une industrie en évolution."
