George R.R. Martin hints at a potential Elden Ring movie, but his involvement remains uncertain due to his ongoing work on The Winds of Winter.
The acclaimed author, known for creating the world of Game of Thrones, played a significant role in developing the lore for FromSoftware's Elden Ring, a 2022 bestseller. FromSoftware and Bandai Namco prominently featured Martin's contribution in their marketing, crediting both Hidetaka Miyazaki and Martin for the game's world creation.
While dodging questions about an Elden Ring sequel during IGN Fan Fest 2025, Martin revealed discussions regarding a film adaptation: "Well, I can't say too much about it, but there is some talk about making a movie out of Elden Ring."
This isn't the first time such a possibility has surfaced. Miyazaki himself has expressed openness to an adaptation, provided a strong collaborative partner is involved, acknowledging FromSoftware's lack of experience in film production.
However, Martin highlighted a potential obstacle: his commitment to completing The Winds of Winter, the long-awaited sixth book in his A Song of Ice and Fire series. He admitted that his current writing schedule significantly limits his capacity for additional projects. The substantial delay of The Winds of Winter, with its last installment released in 2011, continues to be a major focus for Martin.
Martin detailed his contribution to Elden Ring's world-building, explaining his collaboration with FromSoftware in establishing the game's rich history and lore, centuries before the game's present-day events. He emphasized the extensive background material created, suggesting ample unused content for potential future projects.
