James Gunn recently updated reporters on the DC Universe's status at a DC Studios presentation. Among other announcements, Gunn revealed he's actively scripting his next DCU directorial effort, following Superman. He's certainly a busy man!
While Gunn remained tight-lipped about his next project (likely until after Superman's July release), we've compiled potential candidates perfectly suited to his unique style. Which franchises and characters best align with his vision? Which films should take priority as Gunn and Peter Safran build this new shared universe? Here are our top choices for Gunn's next DC endeavor.

Batman: The Brave and the Bold
Despite Batman's cinematic ubiquity, Batman: The Brave and the Bold generates considerable buzz. This film will reboot Batman, introducing the DCU's Caped Crusader. Unlike recent iterations, it will spotlight the Bat-family, including Bruce Wayne's son, Damian.
Uncertainty surrounds The Brave and the Bold. Development seems slow, and Andy Muschietti's directorial involvement remains questionable post-presentation. Introducing a second cinematic Batman to coexist with Robert Pattinson's presents a significant challenge.
The DCU needs a compelling Batman. He's crucial, and this iteration must succeed. If Muschietti departs, Gunn's involvement could ensure the project's success (a possibility already being discussed). Gunn's expertise in crafting emotional father-son narratives (as seen in Guardians of the Galaxy) makes him ideally suited for the Bruce/Damian dynamic.
The Flash
The Flash is essential to any DC Universe, a Justice League cornerstone and a multiverse linchpin. However, his live-action history is rocky. The CW series demonstrated the potential of a Team Flash ensemble, while Ezra Miller's DCEU portrayal faltered, resulting in a box-office flop.
The Flash needs a fresh start, avoiding clichés like Flashpoint. The film should focus on Barry Allen (and/or Wally West), preventing Batman from overshadowing the titular character.
Gunn's knack for dynamic action and relatable character development (evident in the Guardians films) would greatly benefit a Flash movie.
The Authority
Gunn acknowledged the challenges of adapting The Authority, stating difficulty in finding a unique angle that distinguishes it from The Boys and similar projects.
"Honestly, Authority's been the toughest, due to the evolving story and the need to differentiate it in a landscape already influenced by The Boys," Gunn explained. "Plus, we have beloved characters already filmed whose stories we want to continue. So, it's currently on the back burner."
The Authority is crucial to the expanding DCU. It was among the initially announced projects, and María Gabriela de Faría's Engineer appears in Superman. The DCU will likely explore the contrast between optimistic heroes like Superman and the cynical Authority.
Gunn's talent for portraying misfit heroes and crafting engaging team dynamics makes him a strong candidate. The Authority is challenging, but Gunn could overcome the obstacles.
Amanda Waller/ARGUS Movie
Gunn mentioned setbacks for the planned Waller series, understandable given his commitments to Superman, Peacemaker: Season 2, and Creature Commandos. As his schedule frees up, prioritizing Waller (potentially as a film) makes sense.
Waller and ARGUS are the DCU's connective tissue. ARGUS appears in Superman, and Rick Flag, Sr. (Frank Grillo) appears in both Superman and Peacemaker: Season 2. Focusing on this element and its puppet master is logical. If the series proves problematic, a film adaptation might be the solution.
Batman & Superman: World's Finest
Batman v Superman (2016), despite its box-office success, fell short of expectations. Its dark tone alienated some viewers.
A team-up film portraying Batman and Superman as allies is needed. Gunn could excel at this type of crossover, showcasing their collaborative efforts against formidable threats. Instead of focusing solely on The Brave and the Bold, combining Gunn's Superman with that film's Batman could create a major hit for the growing DCU.
Titans
The Teen Titans boast a massive fanbase and a rich history. While Max's Titans series had flaws, it demonstrated the characters' viability in live-action.
A live-action Titans movie is highly appealing. Their dysfunctional yet loving dynamic contrasts with the Justice League. Gunn's success with the Guardians suggests he could transform the Titans into a compelling family unit.
Justice League Dark
The DCU's "Gods and Monsters" phase, featuring Swamp Thing and Creature Commandos, indicates a supernatural focus. Establishing a supernatural Justice League counterpart is logical.
Justice League Dark provides a platform for magical heroes like Zatanna, Etrigan, Deadman, Swamp Thing, and John Constantine. Their inherent dysfunction aligns perfectly with Gunn's style. Including a character like Batman or Wonder Woman could attract a broader audience.
