The Nintendo Switch 2: A Giant Leap for Portable Gaming?

Initial glimpses of the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal trailer showcase a noticeably larger console than its predecessor. The transition animation depicts the original Switch's Joy-Cons detaching, revealing a significantly expanded tablet section. This substantial size increase suggests a departure from Nintendo's traditionally compact handhelds, embracing the larger portable devices exemplified by the Steam Deck and iPad.

While Nintendo hasn't released official dimensions, estimations can be made based on the trailer and a recent leak. A Switch 2 mockup, unveiled at CES 2025 by peripheral designer Genki, closely resembles the console shown in the trailer. Therefore, measurements taken from the mockup provide a strong basis for estimating the Switch 2's size.

Estimated Switch 2 Screen Size:

Our estimations point to an 8-inch screen (diagonal measurement, excluding bezels), aligning with earlier 2024 rumors. This translates to approximately 177mm wide and 99mm tall. This represents a nearly 30% increase in diagonal size and a 66% increase in area compared to the original Switch's 6.2-inch display. The Switch Lite's 5.5-inch screen is dwarfed by the Switch 2's estimated size (45% larger diagonally, 111% larger in area), and even the Switch OLED's 7-inch display is noticeably smaller (14% larger diagonally, 30% larger in area).

Compared to the Steam Deck's 7-inch (original) and 7.4-inch (OLED) displays, the Switch 2's estimated 8-inch screen is still larger (8% larger diagonally and 11% larger in area than the Steam Deck OLED).

Estimated Switch 2 Overall Console Size:

The larger screen necessitates a larger console. Measurements from the Genki mockup suggest the Switch 2 is approximately 265mm long and 115mm tall. This is roughly 25% larger than the original Switch (239mm x 102mm), 61% larger than the Switch Lite (208mm x 91mm), and about 12% smaller than the Steam Deck (298mm x 117mm). Depth is estimated to be similar to the original Switch's half-inch thickness.

Estimated Switch 2 Joy-Con Size:

The trailer suggests Joy-Con width remains similar, but height increases. Estimated dimensions are 32mm wide and 115mm tall, representing a 13% increase over the originals.

Estimated Switch 2 Screen Unit Size:

Subtracting Joy-Con dimensions from the overall console size, the estimated screen unit size is 200mm long and 115mm tall, approximately 31% larger than the original Switch. This allows for relatively slim bezels (approximately 11mm on the sides and 8mm on the top and bottom).

It's crucial to remember that these are estimations. Official dimensions from Nintendo will provide definitive confirmation. However, based on the Genki mockup's accuracy, these estimations offer a strong indication of the Switch 2's significant size increase.
