The Nintendo Switch 2: A Sneak Peek

The surprise January 16th, 2025 YouTube reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2 console trailer, accurately predicted by NateTheHate, left gamers buzzing. While release date rumors swirled for months, the official announcement was a welcome shock. Haven't seen it? Check it out below:

[Table of Contents] Size Design What's Inside? Release Date Price What Games Await?

Size and Dimensions: A Bigger Experience

The trailer clearly showcases a larger console than its predecessor. The screen, Joy-Cons, and even the thumbsticks are noticeably bigger. While precise specs remain under wraps, insiders suggest dimensions of 116mm (height), 270mm (width), and 14mm (thickness). This translates to a 3.1cm wider and 1.4cm taller console than the standard Switch, potentially boasting an 8-inch screen (compared to the OLED Switch's 7-inch display).

Redesigned Joy-Cons and Enhanced Controls

The Joy-Cons sport a magnetic connection secured by recessed contacts within the console body. Insiders assure us this design is robust, preventing accidental disconnections and accidental damage. The SL and SR buttons are larger and metallic, contributing to the magnetic hold. This design, however, necessitates screen bezels.

The Joy-Con attachment mechanism has also been refined, with a side-insertion design and flatter grips. Larger buttons and Hall effect sensors in the thumbsticks aim to eliminate joystick drift. Sadly, the IR camera appears absent, potentially impacting backward compatibility with games like Ring Fit Adventure.

A USB Type-C port and microphone are visible on the top bezel, hinting at potential wired controller support and in-game voice chat.

Internal Specifications: Powerful Potential

Details are scarce, but the April 2nd Nintendo Direct promises full specifications. Current speculation suggests performance comparable to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, potentially supporting Quad HD resolution in docked mode.

  • Storage: 256 GB
  • Memory Card Support: microSDHC, microSDXC, microSD Express
  • Screen: 8-inch LCD (no OLED at launch, reportedly)
