Sega Confirms Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds on Switch 2 Cartridge

Authore: BellaUpdate:Sep 07,2025

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is getting a special physical edition for Nintendo Switch - and here's the exciting part: the entire base game comes pre-loaded on a massive 64GB cartridge.

Now here's where things get interesting with Switch 2 Game-Key Cards. These aren't your traditional game cartridges - they're essentially download tokens in card form. You pop it into your Switch 2, redeem the code, then download the full game digitally. This approach has raised eyebrows among collectors who value tangible game ownership over digital licenses.

For Sonic enthusiasts, this announcement settles previous confusion. Sega's new FAQ makes it crystal clear: "The physical edition contains the complete base game right on the cartridge - no downloads required."

The FAQ also revealed several player-friendly features: crossplay functionality between Switch generations, save data transfer from original Switch to Switch 2, and a budget-friendly $10 upgrade option for next-gen enhancements.

This stands in stark contrast to Square Enix's recent controversy over their Dragon Quest remakes, where they confirmed no upgrade path or save compatibility for Switch 2 players.

The character roster looks wild - beyond the expected Sonic universe regulars (Sonic, Tails, Knuckles etc.), the game throws in shocking guest racers including SpongeBob SquarePants, Avatar characters, and even the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!

September's release sets up an epic showdown against Nintendo's Mario Kart World - which notably avoids third-party characters. What makes this rivalry particularly interesting? CrossWorlds launches on BOTH Switch generations simultaneously.

Our recent hands-on session left us pleasantly surprised: "The game captures that perfect arcade racing energy - the kind that makes you keep coming back for just one more race," we noted after playing. That signature blue blur speed sensation translates beautifully to the kart racing format.
