Sony Unveils teamLFG: New PlayStation Studio from Bungie, Developing Team-Based Action Game

Sony has unveiled a new PlayStation studio named teamLFG, which originated from the acclaimed Destiny and Marathon developer, Bungie. In a recent post on the PlayStation Blog, Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Studio Business Group, shared his excitement about teamLFG's ambitious debut project. The studio's name, teamLFG, stands for 'Looking For Group,' hinting at a focus on social gaming experiences.

teamLFG's inaugural game is described as a team-based action game that draws inspiration from a diverse range of genres, including fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and "frog-type games." Set in a new, mythic, science-fantasy universe, the game promises a lighthearted and comedic atmosphere. The studio aims to create a space where players can forge friendships, build communities, and feel a sense of belonging.

"We are driven by a mission to create games where players can find friendship, community, and belonging," teamLFG stated. They emphasized the joy of logging in to find teammates already online, recognizing familiar names, and creating memorable moments that become the stuff of legends within the game. The studio is committed to crafting immersive multiplayer worlds that players can engage with for countless hours, continuously evolving the game through player feedback and early access playtests.

teamLFG's project was initially developed at Bungie but was spun off amid significant layoffs last year. Following Sony's acquisition, Bungie struggled to meet financial targets with Destiny 2, leading to layoffs affecting approximately 100 employees in November 2023, followed by another 220 in 2024, which represented 17% of the studio's workforce. The remaining 155 employees were integrated into other parts of Sony Interactive Entertainment, and it was during this restructuring that the incubation project, now known as teamLFG's game, was announced.

Recent developments at Bungie include the full reveal of the extraction shooter Marathon and the confirmation of the future roadmap for Destiny 2. However, there are no plans for Destiny 3, and a spinoff project called Payback has been canceled. A former Bungie lawyer praised Sony's role in pushing for improvements to Destiny 2, suggesting a positive impact from the parent company.
