The HBO adaptation of The Last of Us Part II will portray Abby differently than her video game counterpart. Showrunner Neil Druckmann explains that actress Kaitlyn Dever didn't need the same physical build because the show prioritizes drama over the moment-to-moment violent action featured in the game. The game required distinct mechanical differences between Ellie and Abby, with Abby designed as a physically imposing character. This isn't as crucial in the show, allowing for a different interpretation of Abby's strength. Druckmann emphasizes that this approach allowed them to cast a phenomenal actress in Dever.
Fellow showrunner Craig Mazin adds that the show explores a more physically vulnerable but spiritually stronger Abby, focusing on the origins and manifestations of her formidable nature. This will unfold across multiple seasons, as Part II's story is planned to span beyond a single season. While Season 3 isn't confirmed, Season 2, comprised of seven episodes, concludes with a natural breakpoint.
The negative online reaction to Abby's character in the game is acknowledged. Druckmann and Laura Bailey (Abby's voice actress in the game) faced harassment, including threats against their families. This online toxicity led to increased security for actress Kaitlyn Dever during filming. Isabel Merced (Dina) reminds viewers that Abby is a fictional character, highlighting the absurdity of the real-world harassment.
