Unveiled: Epic Games Space Marine 2 Requirements Ignite Discord Among Fans

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2's PC release has sparked controversy over its mandatory use of Epic Online Services (EOS) for cross-platform play, even for Steam users who don't want the feature.

Epic Games confirmed to Eurogamer that crossplay on the Epic Games Store requires EOS integration for all multiplayer games. While Focus Entertainment clarified that linking Steam and Epic accounts isn't required to play, EOS is necessary for crossplay functionality. This means even Steam players who have no interest in crossplay must install EOS. This policy has led to a significant backlash from gamers.

Developers aren't forced to use EOS, but it's the easiest way to meet Epic's crossplay requirements for games on their store. EOS offers pre-built solutions and is free to use, making it an attractive option for developers.

The mandatory EOS installation has caused significant negative Steam reviews, with many citing concerns about "spyware" and the extensive EULA. The privacy implications of the EULA, particularly regarding data collection in certain regions, have further fueled the criticism. However, it's important to note that hundreds of other games, including titles like Hades and Elden Ring, also utilize EOS. This raises questions about whether the negative reception to Space Marine 2's EOS implementation is a justified concern or a knee-jerk reaction to a common industry practice.

Players can uninstall EOS, but this will disable crossplay functionality. Despite the controversy, Space Marine 2 has received generally positive reviews, with Game8 awarding it a 92, praising its gameplay and faithfulness to the Warhammer 40,000 universe. The game's success, despite the EOS backlash, highlights the complex relationship between developer convenience, platform requirements, and player preferences.
