Techland Revives Original Dying Light With Surprise Free Retouched Update

Techland is surprising fans with a return to Harran through a free content update for the original Dying Light, marking 10 years since the game's release with what they're calling the Retouched update.

A Decade Later: Enhanced But Familiar

Scheduled for June 26, 2025, this update brings comprehensive improvements to the 2015 zombie parkour classic across PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Techland confirms this isn't a full remaster but an optimization of the original experience.

Franchise director Tymon Smektała clarified expectations: "Many assumed we were creating a full remaster. The Retouched Update is about refining what already works in Dying Light, not reinventing it."

Visual and Audio Upgrades

The update introduces enhanced textures, lighting effects, and shadow details - noticeable in elements like weathered wooden fences and reflective metal surfaces. Techland particularly highlighted improvements to urban textures like stone pathways and concrete walls.

Original composer Paweł Blaszczak returned to remaster the soundtrack, re-recording the entire score on tape alongside updated ambient sounds and combat audio.

Technical Challenges

"Working with decade-old technology presented unique obstacles," Techland admitted. "Applying modern techniques while maintaining stability required extensive optimization work."

The update arrives as the original game maintains impressive player numbers (averaging 12,000 concurrent players) - often surpassing its 2022 sequel's performance.

Looking Forward

This surprise update precedes Dying Light: The Beast, continuing Kyle Crane's story when it launches August 22, 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Our original 2015 review scored the game 8.5/10 for its innovative parkour-action hybrid gameplay.
