Bethesda's Starfield initially planned to feature visceral gore and dismemberment, but technical hurdles forced its removal. Former character artist Dennis Mejillones, who contributed to Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Starfield, explained to Kiwi Talkz that integrating these mechanics with the game's diverse spacesuits proved overwhelmingly complex.
The intricate design of the suits, with their various components and hoses, created significant technical challenges. Mejillones described the development process as becoming a "big rat's nest" due to the numerous factors that needed to be accounted for, including helmet removal, flesh detailing, and the impact of customizable body sizes.
While some fans expressed disappointment over the absence of gore and dismemberment – features present in Fallout 4 – Mejillones argued that such mechanics were more fitting for Fallout's humorous tone. He noted that the over-the-top violence contributed to Fallout's unique appeal.
Starfield, Bethesda's first major single-player RPG in eight years, launched in September 2023 to over 15 million players. IGN's 7/10 review highlighted the game's expansive RPG elements and satisfying combat as its key strengths, despite various challenges.
Recent revelations from another former Bethesda developer shed light on the extensive loading times, particularly noticeable in Neon. Since launch, Bethesda has addressed performance issues, including the addition of a 60fps performance mode, and released the "Shattered Space" expansion in September.
