Nightreign Update Ditches Expected FromSoftware Feature in Elden Ring

Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messages, But Enhanced Asynchronous Features

Elden Ring Nightreign will notably omit the in-game messaging system, a staple of the Soulsborne series, according to FromSoftware. This decision, confirmed by game director Junya Ishizaki in a January 3rd interview with IGN Japan, is attributed to the game's fast-paced, multiplayer-focused design. The shorter gameplay sessions, estimated at around 40 minutes each, leave insufficient time for players to engage with the messaging system effectively.

The absence of messages doesn't signify a complete removal of asynchronous features. In fact, key elements are returning, enhanced. The bloodstain mechanic, for example, will be significantly improved, allowing players to not only witness others' deaths but also loot their fallen counterparts.

FromSoftware's goal is a more "compressed RPG" experience for Nightreign. The three-day game structure reflects this ambition for a consistently intense, action-packed experience with minimal downtime and maximum variety. This streamlined approach explains the removal of the messaging system, considered a trade-off for a more focused gameplay loop.

While a 2025 release is targeted, as shown in the TGA 2024 trailer, a precise launch date remains unannounced by FromSoftware and Bandai Namco.
