EA Mandates Office Return, Halts Remote Hiring

Authore: MiaUpdate:May 15,2025

Electronic Arts (EA) has informed its employees of a significant shift in its work policies, moving away from remote work to a mandatory return to office. In an email sent to staff, CEO Andrew Wilson emphasized the benefits of in-person collaboration, stating that it fosters "a kinetic energy that fuels creativity, innovation, and connection," which can lead to breakthroughs and enhanced player experiences. He defined the new "hybrid work" model as requiring employees to be in the office at least three days a week, with plans to phase out "offsite local roles."

Further details were provided in a subsequent email from Laura Miele, president of EA Entertainment, who outlined the transition to a "globally consistent, enterprise-wide work model." Key points from her communication include:

  • The policy changes will not be immediate; employees should continue their current work arrangements until further notice.
  • A minimum 12-week notice period will be given before implementing any changes, with the timing varying by location.
  • Hybrid work will require employees to be in the office at least three days a week, aligning with Wilson's directives.
  • A 30-mile/48-km radius around EA locations will determine whether employees are required to transition to the hybrid model.
  • Employees within this radius will shift to hybrid work, while those outside will remain remote unless their roles are designated as On Site or Hybrid.
  • The Offsite Local work model will be phased out over the next 3 to 24 months.
  • Exceptions to the new work model and future remote hires will need approval from a CEO Direct.

Anonymous sources within EA expressed dissatisfaction and confusion to IGN. Some employees highlighted the potential for lengthy commutes, while others were concerned about childcare and personal medical conditions that had been better managed with remote work. Remote employees outside the 30-mile radius expressed uncertainty about their future roles if they could not or would not relocate closer to an office.

Remote work has been a common practice in the video game industry, especially since the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic necessitated its widespread adoption. Many workers had moved to more affordable areas under the belief that remote work would be permanent. However, several major companies, including Rockstar Games, Ubisoft, and Activision Blizzard, have recently mandated returns to the office, sparking criticism and, in some cases, employee turnover.

EA's decision comes on the heels of recent layoffs, including approximately 300 employees company-wide, following earlier cuts at BioWare and the termination of around 670 positions last year.

IGN has sought comment from EA regarding these developments.
